マサチューセッツ海事大学の学生らが3週間の短期留学プログラムを修了

2026年6月14日から7月3日まで、海洋政策科学部は深江キャンパスにおいて、米国マサチューセッツ海事大学(Massachusetts Maritime Academy、以下MMA)の学生18名および教員2名を受け入れ、3週間の短期留学プログラムを実施しました。3年目を迎えた本プログラムは、海事分野の専門講義、実地研修、文化体験を組み合わせた集中プログラムであり、本年度も盛況のうちに幕を閉じました。

講義では、日本の鉄道システム(水谷 元准教授、現・明治大学准教授)、日本の舶用機関(石田准教授)、スケジューリング・アルゴリズム(沖本教授)、ロボット技術と遠隔操作無人探査機(ROV)(元井准教授)、船舶安全(高見准教授)、津波の科学(ゴメス教授)、クルーズ客船観光の影響(酒井准教授)など、海事・工学分野の幅広いテーマについて、本学部教員による英語講義が行われました。あわせて日本語入門の授業も実施されたほか、MMAの学生は海事英語やアカデミック・ライティングの授業に本学学生とともに参加し、3週間を通じて両校の学生間の交流が深まりました。

実地研修も本プログラムの大きな柱です。MMAの学生は練習船「海神丸」での終日航海や大阪コンテナターミナルの見学を通じて、日本の海事教育、船舶運航、港湾物流を肌で体験しました。また、プログラム期間中はチームに分かれて海事研究プロジェクトに取り組み、最終日前の教職員・学生が参加するセミナーにおいてその成果を発表しました。発表後の送別会は、同窓会「海神会」からのご寄付により開催され、MMAの学生・教員と、プログラムを支えた多くの教職員・学生との温かい交流の場となりました。

教室外では、京都、姫路城、奈良、和歌山への日帰り研修や関西の文化と歴史に触れたほか、西宮での海岸清掃ボランティアに参加し、滞在先の地域社会への貢献活動も行いました。

本プログラムは、マシュー・ルックス准教授およびグレゴリー・ショルト准教授が企画・運営を担当し、平田教授、中田准教授、博士課程の近藤さんをはじめ、多くの教職員・学生の協力のもとで実施されました。

プログラムを修了したMMAの学生の皆さんに心よりお祝いを申し上げるとともに、この貴重な国際交流がさらに発展し、来年度も新たなグループを深江キャンパスに迎えられることを楽しみにしています。

Massachusetts Maritime Academy Students Complete Three-Week Study Program at the Faculty of Ocean Science and Technology

From June 14 to July 3, 2026, the Faculty of Ocean Science and Technology welcomed 18 students and two faculty members from Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) to the Fukae campus for a three-week short-term study abroad program. Now in its third year, the program once again brought together specialized maritime coursework, hands-on training, and cultural exchange, concluding with great success.

The academic program featured English-language lectures by Faculty members on a wide range of maritime and engineering topics, including Japan's railway system (Associate Professor Mizutani from Meiji University), marine engineering in Japan (Associate Professor Ishida), scheduling algorithms (Professor Okimoto), robotics and remotely operated vehicles (Associate Professor Motoi), ship safety (Associate Professor Takami), tsunami science (Professor Gomez), and the impact of passenger ship tourism (Associate Professor Sakai). The visiting students also received introductory Japanese language instruction and joined Maritime English and academic writing classes alongside our own students, creating valuable opportunities for interaction between the two student bodies throughout the three weeks.

Hands-on learning was a central pillar of the program. The MMA students spent a full day at sea aboard the university's training ship Kaijin-maru and toured the Osaka Container Terminal, gaining first-hand exposure to Japanese maritime training, ship operations, and port logistics. In parallel, the students worked in teams on a maritime research project that ran throughout the program, presenting their findings at a final seminar attended by faculty and students. The farewell party that followed was made possible by a generous donation from the alumni association KAIJINKAI, and offered a warm send-off shared by the MMA visitors and the many Faculty members and students who supported them.

Beyond the classroom, the group experienced the culture and history of the Kansai region through full-day excursions to Kyoto, Himeji Castle, Nara, and Wakayama, and a volunteer beach cleanup in Nishinomiya ? a chance to give back to the local community that hosted them.

The program was created, organized, and administered by Associate Professors Matthew Rooks and Gregory Sholdt, with lectures and support generously provided by Professor Hirata, Associate Professor Nakada, doctoral student Kondo, and many other members of the Faculty.

We congratulate the MMA students on successfully completing the program, and we look forward to welcoming the next group to Fukae as this valuable international partnership continues to grow.
