President Chau-Jen Chow of the National Kaohsiung Marine University visited Kobe University on March 26, 2009. Vice President Rong-Hua Yeh, and Associate Professor Hui-Lung Yu from the Dept. of Shipping and Transportation Management accompanied the president.
The National Kaohsiung Marine University was established in 1946 as the Kaohsiung Branch of the Provincial Keelung Marine and Fisheries Vocational School. After several restructuring, it became the National Kaohsiung Marine University in 2004. Marine related education and research is very important for Taiwan because it is, like Japan, surrounded on all four sides by the ocean. Dean NAKAMURA of the Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Dean ISHIDA of the Graduate School of Maritime Sciences, and Professor NISHIO of the Graduate School of Maritime Sciences were on hand to greet the delegation.
Since both President Chow and Associate Professor Yu studied in Japanese universities, the meeting was held mostly in Japanese. Dr. Yu holds a doctorate degree from Kobe University Graduate School of Law. Discussions touched on various topics including the possibilities of academic exchange in the fields of marine engineering and biotechnology.
