Marine Engineering graduates take up a wide range of occupations. These range from the merchant marine engineering officers to teaching and lectureships. Many proceed to the 6 months' Sea Training Course to sit for the Third Grade Maritime Officer (Engineering) licensing examination, while others enter various industries on land such as heavy industries, ship yards, public utilities, energy industries, transportation, manufacturing computing, civil service etc. Some pursue their careers in insurance and/or trading companies. Of course the graduates can proceed to higher academic degree of the graduate program.
Department of Maritime Logistics
The goal of Maritime Logistics program is to lead our student to a system engineer who can solve problems in the planning, operation, and management of transportation systems. This program provides students with an understanding of the issues involved in the movement of people and goods by goods by, sea, air, and land. For this, the program focuses on the optimization of transportation and distribution systems from socioeconomic, mathematical, and computer scientific view points. With a wide variety of electives, the curriculum allows students to concentrate either on management science or information science aspect. A substantial part of this program is taught by the Maritime Logistics chairs in our graduate school. This program prepare students for careers in ports and warehouses, freight forwarders logistics services, computer and other manufactures and software houses.
Department of Marine Engineering
The goal of the Marine Engineering is to provide graduates with a broad background in electronic, mechanical and ocean engineering for careers as electro-mechanical engineers in maritime as well as non-maritime industries. This program aims to equip students with an understanding of principles of marine devices and machinery along with general knowledge of engineering sciences for entry-level work or for advanced study. Attention is focused on developing students' ability to use computer and simulation technology as engineering problem solving tools. The course of study includes studies in evolving areas of mechatronics, materials, cryogenics, energy conversion, and manufacturing processes. What the program delivers is broad-based but advanced knowledge beneficial to the flexible and creative application in engineering systems planning, design, production as systems operation and control. Graduates are employed by electric, electronic, machinery, manufacturing, automatic control, air-conditioning and information-processing companies.

Anyone wishing to play an active role in an interdisciplinary field of planning and research in maritime firms and maritime administrations by mastering the specialized and interdisciplinary study of maritime sciences. Anyone seeking the ability to solve various problems pertaining to transportation and logistics and the passion to engage in research and development. Anyone, equipped with a global-scale perspective on marine environment conservation, who wishes to become an professional in carrying out work in research and development of front-line technology, mechatronics, and energy and environmental science.
Admission Process
Three methods will be applied in the admissions process as outlined below:
- Guidelines for Admissions of General Applicants
- Guidelines for Special Admissions of Foreign Students
- Guidelines for Special Admissions of Working (Adult) Students
For details, refer to the Kobe University Graduate School of Maritime Science master's program for enrollees.
After admissions, working students will be eligible for special treatment in terms of course flexibility.
In recent years, demand has been growing for continued training and reeducation, and the acquisition of master's degrees among working engineers and researchers at graduate school level. However, under the normal method of graduate school education, working graduate students are required to leave their master's programs. This severely narrows the opportunity to have graduate school education. Article 14 of the criteria for the Establishment of Graduate Schools, on the other hand, states that "When the need for special treatment in graduate courses in recognized, appropriate methods of education, such as offering lectures of a research environment at nighttime or other specified times, are permitted," and this allows for special consideration for working graduate students to continue their education.
With these considerations in mind, the Graduate School of Maritime Sciences will implement special education methods as stipulated in the Article. The description of the method is as follows.
Upon receiving consent from the appointed faculty member, a student may take a portion of his/her lectures and research training at nighttime or other specified times.
If the appointed faculty member approves the progression of the thesis and also recognizes that the student's workplace is equipment for research that will lead to a better outcome, then the student will be allowed to do his/her research at his/her workplace.
